Enka is a representative genre of Japanese popular music. Many say it is a Japanese equivalent to the Country & Western music because many songs in the genre are about sadness and drinking. Visit the respective category of Yahoo! for more information on enka.
Since Christianity is considered as a minor "western" religion in Japan, linking it with a rather traditional culture has been something very rare. Peter Ueno, a Japanese pastor in California, came up with an new idea of spreading the gospel through enka, a style of music which is very familiar to Japanese ears. However, unlike other typical enka songs, lyrics are about praising the Lord or witnessing his love. For purchase information, contact Yumi Matsumoto (Japan) or Peter Itsuo Ueno (other countries).
