    Editorial Reviews:

    Product Description
The Overrated book is brought to you by the staff of Chunklet Magazine, a paragon of satire for the holy cows of underground music and culture. Since the early 90s, the magazine has mercilessly lampooned the music industry, and is one of the most loved reads for the hippest bands and music aficionados. In recent issues, the magazine has an official guide of what music not to buy and made extensive charts of a Pay Not To Play system, offering bands large amounts of money to breakup, and Adopt a Gutter Punk program to make the world smell just a tiny bit better. The magazine has a highly graphicstyle and combines the work of political cartoonist Ted Rall with many talented, young artists from the Cartoon network. The musings of David Cross (Mr. Show, Arrested Development), Sarah Silverman (Saturday Night Live, School of Rock, Crank Yankers, Jesus Is Magic), Patton Oswalt (King of Queens, Comedians of Comedy), Janeane Garofalo (Saturday Night Live, Air America Radio) Brian Posehn (Mr. Show, Just Shoot Me,), and Zach Galifianakis (Late Night With Zach, Bubble Boy).

4 out of 5 stars Only For Newcomers   October 3, 2007
I already have the both of the Chunklet Overrated Issues, and I've read them over and over, which is particularly amazing considering it's just a magazine. When I saw that there was an overrated book, I figured it would be more stuff in the same general vein.
Unfortunately, it's the exact same stuff in the magazine. I don't mind magazine retrospectives, but just reprinting the last two issues in book form just doesn't cut it.
That said, if you've never read the Overrated Issues, and you have even a passing interest in indie music, this is a must buy. Chunklet definitely provides my favorite perspective on music, and I wish that it was a regularly published magazine. But I also wish they could have thrown a little bit more new material in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious deconstruction of musical esoterica, cliches, sub-trends and indie-fanzine-hipster minutiae! INDISPENSIBLE!!!!!   March 1, 2007

This book isn't for everyone. Its humor is highly subject-specific and esoterically geared. That being said, if you fancy yourself any kind of independent music aficionado or critic and know enough background about a great number of bands from past and present, if you digest MOJO magazine and only occasionally pick up Spin when at the dentist's office, if you are schooled in the ways of Pitchfork and can speak fluent Forced Exposure, if you prefer Patton Oswalt's magnificent unedited "222" over the streamlined "Feelin' Kinda Patton," if you can quickly recognize obscure bands such as "Non" and "Sheriff" and explain their respective claims to fame, if you think Sgt. Pepper is the most overrated album by the most overrated band in history, congratulations!! This book will make your dreams come true and you will laugh until your intestines spill out your nose!! Guaranteed classic!!!

    1 out of 5 stars Tripe   December 11, 2006

This is a load of tripe. For example, in it's explanation for choosing Pet Sounds #2 on the list of the most overrated albums of all time it states that "Listening to Pet Sounds made people think they knew about music". That's funny, because this entire book comes off as being written by a bunch of "smarter and more well-read than you" hipsters, revelling in their collections of "indie" and underground music and congratulating themselves on not conforming to the mainstream. Don't waste your money unless you affiliate yourself with that crowd, then you'll love this.

5 out of 5 stars wow, what an idiot.   September 15, 2006

Hey Dude, you write a crappy review of this dude's book because you purchased it by mistake and admittedly "don't get" much of the humor becuause (and I'm paraphrasing here) "you're old and lame and not hip enough to understand the references that lie within the pages of this fine literary work"?

Come on, dude. This is a great book, too much funny to list, and the writers are generally right on.

2 out of 5 stars Meh. The title is accurate, at least...   July 31, 2006

...I purchased this book because of its association with Patton Oswalt, who is one of the funniest comedians around. Oswalt's first CD, "Feeling Kinda Patton" was hilarious, and I purchased from Chunklet the CD "222", which is the unedited version of his performance for the "Feeling Kinda Patton" CD. I liked that so I purchased this book thinking, heck, it has to be good too. NOT.

Anyone who purchases this book based on the title and author line alone, beware! Patton does write a funny foreward but he is definitely not the "author" of this book. I know that fact is thoroughly explained in the detailed description of the book that Amazon provides, but who the heck reads THOSE, anyway? :-)

Younger, more hip readers might enjoy the content of "The Overrated Book" more than I did, but in my defense I am over 40 and obviously not in touch with the ironic humor that Chunklet produces, nor do I pay any attention at all to the underground music scene that is much of the source material for the book. It's probably not a BAD book, but just not what I expected.
