    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com essential video
Originally made for TV in 1977, this in-depth (six hours plus) version of Jesus' life is so thorough that the first hour is devoted solely to the story of his birth. The film doesn't skimp on some of the other landmark events of this famous story either. Director Franco Zeffirelli gives more than 12 minutes screen time each to the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. Passages of the Bible are quoted verbatim, the locations have a Palestine-like authenticity, and, aside from some of the principals (Robert Powell as Jesus, Olivia Hussey as Mary, and Stacy Keach as Barabbas), many of the non-Roman characters are actually played by Semitic-looking actors. Zeffirelli diligently provides the sociopolitical background that gave rise to Jesus' following and the crisis in belief it caused for the people of Israel (and one or two Romans). While not graphic by today's standards, some of the scenes--baby boys being ripped from their mothers' arms and slaughtered, nails being driven into Jesus' hands--may disturb young and/or sensitive children. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars The best so far   January 7, 2009
Jesus of Nazareth (1977) is one of the most beautiful films on Jesus around. I think it is probably the most complete depiction of Jesus' life anyone has ever put on film. The film covers Jesus' birth, His life, His Crucifixion and Resurrection.
If you're interested in Jesus and want to find out more about God, Jesus and the afterlife I suggest you read "The Enlightenment, What God Told Me After One Million Prayers: A Message for Everyone," by John H. Eagan. The book is Great.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie   January 2, 2009
I thought this film was great. It's an in-depth depiction of Jesus' life. This film covers everything from the birth of Jesus to His resurrection. This film was a mini-series on TV years ago and it was gook than. I recommend it.
Just recently I was told about a new book entitled "The Enlightenment, What God Told Me After One Million Prayers: A Message for Everyone," by John H. Eagan. I just finished it. It's really great and deals with Jesus' teachings and His Passion so deeply it will bring you to tears as it did me.

5 out of 5 stars best movie ever made   December 26, 2008
I had seen this movie when it was first shown on t.v. as an mini-series, and have loved it ever since. This movie gives a close account of the life of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the gospels. I will cherish this movie for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A truly inspiring and beautiful film   December 12, 2008
Jesus of Nazareth is a beautiful film that accurately depicts the extraordinary life and death of Jesus Christ. The acting is superb, and the sets and costumes transport you to 1st century Israel and Palestine.
I have used the film to help my 7th grade Religious Education students come to know and love Jesus Christ.

3 out of 5 stars Not as biblically accurate.   November 9, 2008

This video is not as biblically accurate as I was led to believe by the other reviews. I purchased this to augment my bible study teaching so I may be a little tougher on the movie then most people. Dramatic license is taken in several places because of the need to let the viewer know some of the backround as well as the portraying of the actual incidents in Jesus' life. The movie is already 6 hours long so I can understand the necessity of this but some of decisions by the producer are almost ridiculous. Young Jesus is portrayed by a young man with blue eyes, blond hair, and the whitest skin I've ever seen on someone from the middle east. All in all though, the movie has some cool parts and is worth watching. I would recommend it.
