Centered on a girl band with a knack for ending up in the middle of a mystery, Josie and the Pussycats is a 1970 Saturday Hanna-Barbera television cartoon series featuring Josie, a character conceived and drawn by "Archie" Comic legend Dan DeCarlo, his complete 16-episode series features band members Josie, Melody, and Valerie and their entourage Alan, Alexander, Alexandra, and cat Sebastian as they travel the world from one gig to another. Like the Scooby-Doo gang, Josie and her friends invariably find themselves involved in some kind of mystery at every stop. Whether it's saving a fleet of ships from a captain set on avenging his great grandfather, investigating alien invaders with an insatiable hunger for diamonds, or stopping a crazed scientist from controlling the world's weather with a nuclear powered weather machine, lead singer Josie, clever Valerie, and ditzy Melody can be counted upon to combine forces with Josie's boyfriend Alan, the cowardly Alexander, the self-absorbed and scheming Alexandra, and the snickering cat Sebastian to investigate and solve the mystery just in time to don their leopard leotards and deliver a great show. Josie and the Pussycats features the groovy music of a brief-lived 1970 girl pop band of the same name throughout the chase scenes of each show and has the honor of being the first cartoon series to regularly feature a black character (though it beat The Harlem Globetrotters by only half an hour). An interesting 22-minute bonus profile of Dan DeCarlo features extensive interviews with great Marvel cartoonist Stan Lee (Spiderman, Fantastic Four), writer Mark Evanier, cartoonist Scott Shaw, "Archie" chairman and publisher Michael Silberkleit, writer and producer Paul Dini, and a host of others who touch upon everything from this master cartoonist's real-life inspiration for Josie to his influence on future cartoonists and animators, sense of humor, and very distinctive style.  Flashback! December 29, 2008
Wow, what a flashback! This is one of my favorite Hanna-Barbera cartoons. It certainly took me back to my childhood. Those were the good 'ol days when cartoons are just good cartoons.

Crazy capers with the best girl band ever!
I'm a big Pussycats fan from childhood. Heck, even as an adult I purchased the CD of the various and IMO, great songs and talented vocalists from the TV Show.
If you love Josie, Alexander, Alexandra and the gang, naturally this classic toon needs to be in your TV DVD collection.

My 7 year old daughter loves this. She enjoys the music, the thrilling adventures and the never ending pursuit of Alan by Alexandra. (Can't she figure out that Alan likes Josie?) Not a classic such as "The Flintstones" or "The Jetsons" or even the "Smurfs", but a good, solid runner-up. I do not like the packaging though. It is a sturdy, fold-out cardboard that is a pain to slide in and out of the cardboard sleeve.

I recall this cartoon clearly as a kid and even loving the syndicated versions as well as the airplay they got on Cartoon Network, and to see this on DVD is so worth the price even though i have IPOD versions of a few epiodes. On the other hand HB can keep the follwing season sending them in space. Not the fav honestly. Well worth seeing again and again.

Saturday morning nostalgia reigns supreme with the delightful DVD release of the original animated "JOSIE & THE PUSSYCATS." When I was a little boy, my Saturday morning TV ritual included both "SCOOBY DOO, WHERE ARE YOU?" and "JOSIE." Both shows have a lot in common-- and not just because Casey Kasem provided the voice for both "Scooby-Doo's" Shaggy and "Pussycats" manager Alexander Cabot III-- but in terms of plot premise, too.
"Josie and the Pussycats" were a bubble-gum pop group. The girl group,-- Josie, bubble-head blonde Melody, and smart Valerie-- along with Alexander, Alexandria, Alan, and cat companion Sebastian, traveled the world and spent as much time battling weird, nefarious super-villians as they did making music. When I was five years old, I had a crush on Josie, voiced by Janet Waldo, whose name, strangely, does not appear in the closing credits. Turns out, I would have a crush on Josie's hunky boyfriend Alan today. Hee Hee! Hah! Hah!
My favorite villians are Mastermind in "Never Mind A Mastermind" and the evil Countess who develops a strange perfume-like mist to turn everybody in the world old in the final episode "Don't Count On A Countess." One episode, "Plateau Of The Apes Plot," even seems to be inspired directly by "PLANET OF THE APES." Each episode featured an extended "chase sequence" and a bubble-gum pop song like "Clock On The Wall", in addition to the unforgettably catchy title song that opened the show each week.
"JOSIE & THE PUSSYCATS" fans will likely also want to purchase the Saturday Morning cartoon DVD releases of "THE PEBBLES AND BAM-BAMM SHOW" and "SABRINA, THE TEEN-AGE WITCH." Great Fun-- I can't wait!
