Meredith Willson's musical masterpiece is such an American classic, it deserves to be known by each new generation--and this sprightly TV-movie version spiffs it up nicely for the young folk. It's a testament to Willson's achievement that this 2003 production can survive a casting flub: the usually engaging Matthew Broderick's low-key charm is an exact mismatch for the brassy energy of traveling salesman Professor Harold Hill. When Broderick sings the words "thundering, thundering!" from "Seventy-Six Trombones," he sounds as though he's murmuring, murmuring. But he wears well (especially in a nifty "Marian the Librarian"), and he has lyrical support from Kristin Chenoweth's crystal-clear singing. Director Jeff Bleckner has a maddening tendency to cut away from the crucial moment of a scene, but the atmosphere of small-town Iowa is ably created. Adding zip is Molly Shannon, hilarious as chief busybody Mrs. Shinn. In short, the "Think System" still works. --Robert Horton

 Deseves to be in the 50 cent Bin December 19, 2008
Adore "The Music Man" and love Broderick (ever since "WarGames" in 1983) but he was the wrong choice for this show - despite whatever his chronological age was when he made this version, he looked way too young for the role - made me feel like I was watching a High School production of the play... and a BAD High School production at that.

This is a fantastic musical. This movie was very well made. If you are a fan of musicals you will love this classic.
Hollywood Fails Again. August 19, 2008
Hollywood continues to try to re-make already perfect film musicals better. And more often than not they fail. With the Music Man comes another failure. Nothing good to say about this one. Bad bad casting = Matthew Broderick. I've seen actors playing Harold Hill in High School Productions shine compared to the dim portrayal by Broderick. 'Nuf sed.

"The Music Man" is the story of professional con artist Professor Harold Hill, who sets out to con the citizens of River City, Iowa into forming a boys band. During his scheme he meets up with his old buddy Marcellis, who informs him of the new pool table Mayor Shinn has recently installed in the billard parlor. This piece of news gives Harold Hill the "trouble" he needs to convince the good citizens of River City that the only way to prevent corruption in their children is to form a boys band. Along the way he encounters Marian Paroo, the local librarian/music teacher, her mother Mrs. Paroo and her brother, Winthrop. Marian attempts to expose Hill for the fake he is, but in the end after seeing how he treats her mother and brother she falls head over heels for Hill. In the meantime Mayor Shinn pursues the adventure of obtaining Hills credentials however he is foiled at every turn by Hill himself with the help of the River City School Board. This new version of "The Music Man" contains the original score/story by Meredith Wilson with a fresh cast of talented performers. Matthew Broderick shines as Professor Harold Hill with Christian Chenoweth playing the role of Marian the Librarian, Debra Monk as Mrs. Paroo, Victor Garber as Mayor Shinn and Molly Shannon as Mrs. Shinn. This movie is one you will want to enjoy over and over again with your family.

I am a big fan of the Preston/Jones version of Meredith Wilson's "The Music Man" and purchased this DVD only because I think Kristin Chenoweth has one of the best singing voices currently performing. Matthew Broderick, while no Robert Preston, was not nearly so bad as I expected. Kristin Chenoweth was even better in the role (in my opinion) than Shirley Jones had been, and that's quite an achievement -- her performance moved this from 2.5 stars to 4, all by itself.
