As Much a Tribute to Bernstein as to Beethoven December 26, 2008 Bernstein's deeply Romantic interpretations of Beethoven are not to everyone's liking, but there's no question of the passion with which he conducted the piano concertos. As other reviews have noted, Zimerman was at both podium and keyboard to round out this set with those Maestro Lenny did not complete with the Vienna Philharmonic, whose performances are inexpressibly wonderful. Two discs of musical joy, superbly priced.
bernstein at his best December 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
for me,anything with maestro bernsteins name on the cover is a winner. especially a performance of a beethoven composition. the concertos,in this case, are absolute golden with the conductor and the soloist,k.zimmerman. and zimmerman does superb job in the first two concerti, both playing the piano and conducting the orchestra as well. of course, i have the cds of these performances, but to have a chance to see the artists at work,is an extra treat to the eyes!!
Brilliant April 25, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This DVD is brilliant in every respect. Faultless in its production and in the performance of the conductor, orchestra and pianist. (for the first two concertos, Zimerman conducts from the piano). It's a joy to listen to and watch. There's nothing more to say. If you appreciate genius buy it, you will not be disappointed.
A magnificent series April 18, 2008 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
This 2 DVD series of Beethoven piano concertos is just amazing --- excellent sound recording and video, superb piano playing by Barenboim, and a most wonderful orchestral performance bt the Berlin Staatskapelle --- all seamlessly put together. I just could not believe how wonderfully the orchestra plays with Barenboim at the keyboard giving minimum signs such as raising eye brows. Barenboim's Beethoven interpretation sound so true, powerful and authoritative. I highly recommend this DVDs in your music library.
Great recording December 31, 2007 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
Great transfer from 80's video to the modern day DD 5.1. Performances are also top notched ones. If you are looking for a complete set, I would recommend this over the other two done by Barenboim and Ashkenazy.
