you really need to hear this December 1, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Scherbakov and Russian State Symphony collaborate on a very good account of the Second and Third Piano Concerto. The piano has the right chiming-bell quality, and both soloist and conductor phrase the broad initial theme captivatingly, with great care taken to match dynamics to the rise and fall of the melody. On the whole, Scherbakov is an artist with a light touch, which serves him well in this music. He brings plenty of delicacy as well as warmth to the slow movements, and his almost balletic approach keeps the finale afloat at a respectably forward-moving tempo. Soundwise the best just got even better. If you're lucky enough to own a 7.1 surround sound system, you really need to hear this. It's both fabulous on its own terms, and a perfect demonstration of what the new technology, intelligently used, can do in the sort of difficult-to-balance classical orchestral music that always has been a singular challenge to capture in regular stereo and even 5.1.
