Tackling the story of Jesus for film is bound to incur controversy. Yet, in a bold move, CBS produced the television miniseries Jesus, which not only retells the biblical story, but takes a look at the more human side of the man. Jeremy Sisto stars, and although it takes a little while for him to gather enough momentum to have us believing him in this role, overall he is surprisingly convincing. While the movie does stray from strict scripture--Jesus is shown feeling conflicted over his feelings for Lazarus's sister Mary; Satan, portrayed by Jeroen Krabbe, works hard at convincing Jesus to stray from his path--most of the plot will be familiar to viewers. Beginning with an adult Jesus, who works with his father as a carpenter, the program traces his life and death through resurrection. The strong supporting cast, including Jacqueline Bisset as Mary, Gary Oldman as Pontius Pilate, and Debra Messing as Mary Magdalene, lends to the credibility of the miniseries. This is a satisfying retelling of the life of Jesus and will please those who want new ways to explore biblical stories, as Jesus not only reinforces the ideals of the New Testament but shows Jesus as a complex individual. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars Great version!   August 18, 2008
This is my favorite "Jesus" movie. The acting is great, the scenery is stunning and the story is entertaining (unlike some other similar movies that seem to drag on).

I first saw this version on TV when I was in Australia. They had an alternate ending that I thought was much better than the ending in this version. That was my only disappointment.

This version also has an interesting take on Satan. This helps link the film to modern times, even though it's dealing with events that are over 2000 years old.

Overall, I highly recommend this film.

1 out of 5 stars The worst "Jesus" film in my library! SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!   May 17, 2008
Not Biblically accurate! Does Not give spiritual inspiration! To my amazement, most of the negative reviews shown here are accurate and true. I hope some will take heed and look for another choice. Again I say; 'SAVE YOUR MONEY!'

2 out of 5 stars WHAT HAPPENED TED TURNER?   March 24, 2008
I'm not into scriptual accuracy as much as I am into being moved by the the spirit of the bible. However this presenentation does niether. This was supposedly done by the same producton team that brought us the TNT productions of Abraham, Joseph, and Moses. I think if they cared more about the high standards they used for these films instead of negotiating of major network release, we would have seen a truly breathtaking Jesus movie.

    5 out of 5 stars A Heart-warming and valuable interpretation   March 3, 2008
This movie's warmth and beauty and the way it explores the cultural context into which Jesus was born far outshine the few flaws. While some cry, "Innaccurate!" and "Non-biblical!" with alarm, I found the plot device of adding the fictional Roman citizen "Livio" to be a brilliant approach. Through Livio's eyes we get an outsider's perspective and commentary on the greater cultural context in which Jesus' life events play out.
Many of the scenarios created for this interpretation are plausible, and only those who believe viewers have no intelligence are frightened by any treatment of the life of Jesus that strays in any way from the pure Scripture. For my part, this exploration increased my curiousity of the culture at Jesus' time, and sent me to the library and to my Biblical scholar friends to explore the themes further.
Not all of the casting was top-notch, but the main caracters hold their parts well. Jeremy Sisto's Jesus was believable and endearing. The fictional scenes between himself and his disciples show him to be interacting with his followers in an entirely human and disarming way.
As one exploration of the life of Jesus, this movie is well worth consideration.

5 out of 5 stars Saved my life!   February 11, 2008
Despite all the other reviews, I have to say this movie was meant for me to watch. I was going through an awful time of my life, attempted suicide, depression, etc. and this movie made me turn to the Bible in which raised many questions for me and I very soon accepted Christ into my life. I don't know that the changes (positive) that followed in my life would have occurred had this movie not come into my life in a "God-like" way and opened my eyes. For the long-time Christian or those more knowledgeable about the Bible and the story of Jesus, this may seem like a poor depiction of the truth. Although, I followed my Bible literally, in my lap, as I watched the movie and found it to be fairly accurate. I did that because I myself was leery of what I was getting myself into by watching this, since it was not recommended by anyone (just sitting in the incorrect section of the video store). I give it a thumbs up!
