Product Description My Life with the Saints is at once James Martin's inspiring memoir of spiritual self-discovery and an homage to the Catholic saints who accompanied him every step of the way. From his lukewarm childhood Catholicism to the executive fast track at General Electric to the Jesuits and a life dedicated to God, Martin looked and prayed to the saints--from St. Peter to Pope John XXIII--to intervene and guide his life. As this witty, confessional, and surprising account unfolds, we see how saints can help us each find our way in the world. Winner of the 2007 Christopher Award and the Catholic Press Award for best spirituality hardcover book of 2007, and named one of Publishers Weekly's 100 Best Books of 2006.

Aiding Focus For A Struggling Catholic December 1, 2008 I have always struggled with my faith, and recently it's gotten worse. I don't normally read religious literature, because I feel that much of it is written from a perspective I just can't understand, in a language that assumes the reader shares the Church's view on all things.
I chose this book to help me focus my intellectual energy in a positive direction. I want to take steps to feel closer to God during my spiritual crisis. This book was the perfect thing to stumble upon the other day, because the author is a "real guy," with the perspective of one who has lived in the outside world, who has had a lay career, and who treats his subjects as humans like, well, like me.
Martin's approach to describing the saints, as unique individuals, is one I've never seen before. In fact, as far as I've read so far, he hasn't mentioned a single miracle performed by any saint. I feel like I have a better understanding of their personalities. I feel like saintly behavior is a little more possible for someone like me, and that's a pretty remarkable feat for this book to accomplish.
I am excited to see which saints I will be drawn to, and am already looking forward to reading more about some of them.
Can't stop to read! November 26, 2008 This is a great book written by a Jesuit father. The author uses a very attaractive and interesting way to tell us the life of the saints. It help us to see how the saints can be related in our life. It is very inspiring book to know how saints are so close to us, in our daily life. Somehow the author helps us to understand Saints can be our mentors in life. Life is a long path, it is always a blessing to have some mentors and insightful people to accompany us to grow. This can create a better spiritual path for our soul.
My Life with the Saints August 27, 2008 This book is a picture book of devoted and prophetic saints. In reading each chapter the author painted a mosaic image of each saint with regards to its life and legend. The author's life experience brought on by the impression each saint left to him was beautifully woven into each chapter. This book is a text book for those of us who desire to know the saints better and to learn how to open our hearts and souls to God and gain a closer relationship with God.
Enjoyable and enlightening July 7, 2008 This is a book that tells as much about the life of the author as it does about the saints. I found it very inspiring. It is well written, easy reading and well worth spending time with.
Saints for Today May 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Father Martin has given us a personal look at his relationships with the saints included in this collection. For everyone who grew up with the idea that saints were holy-card perfect, this book provides a healthy alternative look at people whom we all might hope to imitate. His approach--to include those holy men and women (some not yet canonized) who play a personal role in his own life--is a helpful way to consider the communion of saints. Highest recommendation.
