Great For Beginners! August 12, 2006 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
If you are reading this, you probably already know that the Bible is a wonderful book that can be misused. You probably also know that some churches see the Bible as something to be strictly and literally interpreted, while other churches see it as more of a guide. But it is NOT my intention in this review to touch on these issues. Most priests and nuns consider this a good version of the Bible. In his "Responses to 101 Questions on the Bible," Father Raymond E. Brown refers to the "Good News" as: "...a highly intelligible version." According to my priest, this version of the Bible was really popular in the 70s. The language is straight forward and easy to read. In addition, this particular version is GREAT for beginners. The reason is that (1), there is an introduction to each book giving the reader a brief rundown of the intentions of the individual books. (2), the passages are broken up with titles giving a brief indication of the important topic of the passage. (3.) While the content is to some extent simplified, the essence and beauty is NOT lost. (Unlike the poorly written and lifeless N.I.V.) Whether your church sees the Bible as something to be strictly and literally interpreted or it just sees it as a useful guide, the "Good News" version is a great version to have. While the version I use the most myself is the original "Revised Standard," I will always have a love for the beautifully written "Good News."
The Feel Good Bible April 24, 2006 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
This bible is for people that want to take Christianity more lightly. One example is Matthew 4:17. "Then Jesus started preaching, 'Turn back to God! The kingdom of heaven will soon be here.'" Compare to the King James Version or the Revised Standard Version: "From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Well, this is quite a difference! The original Greek word is "Repent" (metanoeite) Is this the same as "Turn back to God!"? Possibly, some of the Good News according to this version is that you do not have to repent.
Read the KJV please. June 9, 2004 2 out of 29 found this review helpful
This bible is not the true GOD'S Word. It has been changed too much. I believe that the KJV is the true Bible. God died for our sins. He shed his blood so that we might have everlasting life - but, ONLY if we belive. This bible is written to make you feel good about yourself. All we are sinners destined for hell and damnation. God was not brought into this world just to make us feel good about ourselves but to make us feel a need to repent from our sin. We cannot get to heaven in eternity unless we believe in the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
Good translation September 10, 2003 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
I think this Bible version is better than the NIV (New International Version). It also seems to be fairly accurate even along with the King James Version. I disagree with some of the reviewers who gave this version only one star and criticism. The King James is far from perfect as well. I use both the Good News Bible and the King James in my Bible devotional time. Translation is a difficult task (I know, I've studied languages in college). So any work that is an attempt to help bring the Gospel to someone deserves at least some credit.
Evil. November 24, 2000 2 out of 59 found this review helpful
This book has caused more misery than all the wars ever. Anybody who believes in it deserves to burn eternally in the hell they have created with their metaphysical mumbo-jumbo
