5 out of 5 stars This Bible brings The Word alive for me! It opens my heart!   May 19, 2006

I am a devout Catholic. I own many different versions of the Bible. This Catholic One Year Bible is the best translation I have ever read because it brings The Word of God alive for me! It really speaks to my heart, mind, soul, and life! This is the translation in which I can really feel the Holy Spirit!!!

1 out of 5 stars great concept, terrible translation   May 19, 2000

I really like the concept of the One-Year Bible. It's convenient to have the readings broken down by date, and makes reading the Bible approachable. I had been working my way through the NIV version when I discovered that there was a Catholic version out. Since I really wanted the whole Bible, I gave away my NIV version in favor of this one. That turns out to have been a big mistake, because the "Living Bible" translation is horrendous! It's really not a translation at all, but a paraphrase, and an absurd one at that. Look at what they did to the first chapter of John: "Before anything else existed, there was Christ, with God. He has always been alive and is himself God. He created everything there is - nothing exists that he didn't make."

What happened to "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."?

    Swing and a miss, guys!

5 out of 5 stars God's Word in easy daily doses!   August 17, 1999

I thoroughly enjoy my Catholic One Year Bible! It is an easy and delightful way to read the entire Bible in one year. Daily readings include short sections from the Old Testament and the New Testament, a Psalm and a Proverb. I use it constantly in my personal prayer life!

4 out of 5 stars The Bible in digestible pieces for day-to-day consumption   June 6, 1999

OK, you want to read the Bible every day. You know you should (and if you're a Catholic, you really should, because we don't read it as much as we should!). But where to start? It's a big book, after all. This Bible starts at the beginning of the Old Testament, the beginning of the New Testament, the beginning of the Psalms, and the beginning of the Proverbs. You get the whole Bible in order, but you get a piece of the 4 parts mentioned above every day. So, you're not mired in some geneological book of the Old Testament, the way you would be if you tried to read the Bible from the first page on (the Old Testament tends to get a bit heavy sometimes!). It's a good translation -- not the best I've read (I'm pretty conservative), but very readable and not full of colloquialisms or modern slang to throw you off. It's also not as old-fashioned as the Duohey-Rheims Catholic Bible (the Catholic answer to the King James Bible), but it's also not indecipherable, the way D-R can sometimes get. I enjoy reading this Bible. It's the one I keep in my desk at work, and take on breaks.
