Great Book in a Lovely Package October 28, 2008 I love this Bible. It is 7.5 x 5.5 x 1.5", weighs 1 lb 9 oz, and very flexible in your hand. Love the soft, leather-like exterior. It lays flat on a surface when opened and has a "lifetime" guarantee! If the binding fails or you "just wear it out from use, you may return it for a free replacement" in the U.S. The cream colored paper is easy on the eyes, AND it does read more like a novel.
It is more pleasureable to "just read" than other translations, however I'm using it for Bible study as well as other translations because it adds to understanding. As the intro says, virtually anyone can read this Bible & understand what it says. Especially in the Old Testament, it gives a better understanding of context.
Compare Numbers 33 NKJV, These are the journeys of the children of Israel, who went out of the land of Egypt by their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron... For the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn, whom the LORD had killed among them. Also on their gods the LORD had executed judgments, and
Numbers 33 TheMessage, These are the camping sites in the journey of the People of Israel, after they left Egypt, deployed militarily under the command of Moses and Aaron... The Egyptians, busy burying their firstborn whom GOD had killed, watched them go. GOD had exposed the nonsense of their gods.
I don't often think of Moses as a military commander, yet he was a superb military tactician. Also, "camping sites" on a journey registers with me whereas "journeys" doesn't. Then the "camping sites" are listed in a column, not a paragraph, so they're easier to peruse or skip.
LOVE IT August 8, 2008 The Message//Remix, The Bible in Contemporary Language: Leather-Look Purple / Cork EditionI LOVE THE MAKE OF THE BIBLE,COVER IS BEAUTIFUL. LAYS FLAT WHEN YOU OPEN IT. READS LIKE A NOVEL IN CONTEMPORARY LANGUAGE. RECOMMEND IT FOR ANYONE.
Life-Changing Bible July 18, 2008 This is a great Bible! For in-depth study, I like the NIV and am not usually that excited about paraphrased bibles, but this is a dynamic paraphrase, that reads like a story from a friend. It has been very impacting in my own life and it has been life-changing in many individuals who we have given it to. I have and will continue to share this translation with people who are seeking God (because it is so fresh and understandable) and I also enjoy recommending it to people who know the Bible, but need to experience God's Word in an intimate way. I have given this Bible as a gift many times. The bonded leather edition was for me --- it was beyond my expectations! I read it everyday and my whole family loves it, as well. It will hold up to much use and leather is soft and beautiful.
Good Message June 20, 2008 I like this paraphrase, but I wish there was a study bible for this version.. It is cool for new believers. But one thing it leaves out in I Cor 6:9 is homosexual acts and replaces it with abuse sex. Which I think is good, because abusing sex is better, since you could go on forever explaining what abusing sex is. And it does mention homosexual acts and it does mention lisebian acts, too in Romans 1:26.
Breath of Fresh Air! June 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a young minister, and have been in ministry for about 4 years now. My primary translation has been the New American Standard Bible because of its accuracy to the Hebrew and Greek. I always heard of the Message Bible but assumed (which is never a good idea) that it was some man's interpretation of scripture in modern-day paraphrase. BUT when I read that Eugene Peterson was a Greek and Hebrew scholar and prophessor before he was a pastor, and translated the Message with this knowledge and experience as Teacher and Pastor, I decided to give it a try. Ever since it arrived, I have been refreshed and amazed by the wonderful way Mr. Peterson words scriptures to bring out the meaning and "kick you in the face" so to speak. I love it. He comes right out and says in the intro to his translation that this isn't meant to be a study bible, but a way to give life to the scriptures that may be tough to see through many other translations. In one word - refreshing. Thank you Eugene Peterson for your wonderful, Holy Spirit-led work. I recommend this translation to anyone looking for a refreshing outlook on the scriptures.
