    Editorial Reviews:

    Product Description
When Hannah dares to love across the boundaries of tradition, will she lose everything?

Despite being raised in a traditional Old Order Amish family, seventeen-year-old Hannah Lapp desires to break with custom, forgo baptism into the faith, and marry outside the cloistered community. She’s been in love with Mennonite Paul Waddell for three years, and before returning to college for his senior year, Paul asks Hannah to be his wife. Hannah accepts, aware that her marriage will change her relationship with her family forever.

On the evening of their engagement, tragedy strikes and in one unwelcome encounter, all that Hannah has known and believed is destroyed. As she finds herself entangled in questions that the Old Ways of her people cannot answer, Hannah faces the possibility of losing her place in her family, in her community–and in the heart of the man she loves.

    4 out of 5 stars I read this avidly---and didn't notice the flaws much!   November 26, 2008

Reading Amish romances is sort of a guilty pleasure of mine. Guilty not because I feel guilty reading romances, but guilty because I worry they exploit the Amish and are not accurate depictions of their life. Putting that aside, I really enjoyed this book!

Hannah's story reminds me a bit of the book of Job. Horrible things keep happening to her, and most of those around her seem to easily believe nasty rumors about her, and everything seems in the way of her achieving happiness with her love, Paul. This is certainly not always a pretty portrait of Amish life---Hannah's sister and father especially are portrayed as quite cruel people. Hannah struggles to understand her world and why all this is happening, and finally decides to break away from all she has known and start anew.

I think the story would have been stronger if Hannah hadn't done a few silly things that I am sure she would have known not to in real life. Although most of what happens to her is in no way her fault, I think any 17 year old girl, Amish or not, would know that going into a hayloft with a boy would cause talk, or going for a ride with a boy in your nightgown would be seen as not innocent. However, I know at the time Hannah did these things, she was suffering from what was probably post traumatic stress syndrome and not herself.

Matthew, Hannah's friend, seems almost too good to believe, as does Mary, her best friend. Others seems to have no redeeming factors, such as Hannah's sister Sarah. I liked the more well rounded characters the best, such as Hannah herself or her mother or Paul.

One thing that bothered me a bit---the book seems written to have a sequel. And of course it does, but I like books that can stand on their own!

I don't mean to sound so critical. This book does earn 4 stars---it's a compelling view of a girl caught between longing for freedom and love and the pulls of life in a close, caring community. It's also an unfolding of how one evil act can change many lives. I do recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Looking forward to the rest of the series!   November 26, 2008

What a gut-wrenching and provacotive tale. The ending holds realism, yet hope. I appreciate Woodsmall's handling of delicate subjects, but I would not recommend this for young readers.

There is only One that you can always depend on...

Hannah was raised in a traditional Old Order Amish family. She was only 17-years-old when she fell in love with Paul, an educated Mennonite. They knew their different backgrounds would lead to problems. However, the romance of Paul and Hannah acts as only the scenery behind this story. Through no fault of her own, tragedy struck Hannah. Not only does her family turn against her, so does Paul. Only her faith can carry her through the following events. Hannah finds herself questioning the Old Ways of her people.

This is a moving story of Hannah, her faith, and beliefs. Things are not always the way some people see them. You have to believe in yourself even when it seems that no one else does. God is always there for you. Cindy Woodsmall calls on her background in this story. When The Heart Cries is a sad story. This book needs a bit of editing. Woodsmall already has plans to follow up with a sequel.

I'm a huge fan of Lori Wick & Tracie Peterson. So this was not what I was used to for Christian Fiction.

1st I will say you have to read the 2nd book it tells you a lot about Sarah and her issues with Hannah.

Hannah doesn't really deal with what happened because she's just removed herself from what happened. There is a lot of healing in book two. I honestly can't wait for book 3 to come out to see how it all ends.

Also, Ms. Woodsmall did have insight from an Amish friend & a Mennonite friend. So its not like she made this up on a whim. She is a new author give her time to grow.

If you like to read about the Amish, this is a good novel to learn something about the Amish way of life. The book is a fast read. You'll want to read Book #2 and #3 to find out what happens next. Book #1 leave you hanging.
