Looks good, feels good, easy to read. November 23, 2008 I recently moved from regular study in the NASB, to the ESV. I loved the accuracy of the NASB, but having become very used to the translation (and having severely marked up my previous bible), I wanted to try a translation with a smoother flow. The ESV was a perfect choice.
As with most ESV bibles, this edition features brief introductions to each text, and has a good concordance in the back.
I chose this specific edition of the ESV for one main reason: it is single column layout. Most bibles are formatted into dual column layouts, most likely to help people to keep from getting lost. But, unfortunately, in the poetic parts of the bible, the flow and beauty in the literature can be badly interrupted. A single column layout allows the poetic sections of text to rest more naturally on the page and read more naturally, as poetry should.
In addition to the poetry, the single column layout allows for smoother reading. Folks who are acquainted with a swifter reading method will find this edition easier to read and concentrate on.
The single column layout however, is not the only good quality here.
The bible is also compact, but not obnoxiously so. The text is still readable. The leather is soft and bends easily allowing the book to double over on itself without taking permanent form that way. The ribbon is useful. TruTone black will not call too much attention to itself either.
Unfortunately, when the bible arrives it will badly need to be broken in. It will not rest on a flat surface without aid--especially at the end in the New Testament. This is obnoxious and makes the bible a cumbersome part of academic study. Also, while it is no major problem, the bible is a non-standard size. It's slightly shorter and wider than most thinline bibles. The Amazon picture does not clearly show this bible.
Overall, this is an excellent choice for most readers. The translation is easy to read and the formatting of the text helps that. The bible is attractive to the eye and the touch and doesn't take up too much room in your bag.
Good quality, but the type is really small October 21, 2008 I have good vision, but the type in this bible is small and difficult to read easily.
A Very Good Reading Bible September 14, 2008 The best feature of this Bible is its text format. It is perfectly suited for reading, with the cross-references out of the way and the true paragraph form (not verse-by-verse, but real paragraphs). The cover is very nice for its price, and the feel is much better than bonded leather. The words of Christ are in black ink. This may make it harder to find a specific quote of Jesus, but it is less distracting when you're just reading. The only downside I found in this Bible is that the binding is glued, not sewn. If you take the time to separate the pages when you first get the Bible, the Bible will be more flexible and natural. It's big and flexible enough that you rarely have to hold it open, but small enough to hold in one hand. Overall, this is a very good personal general-use Bible purchase.
However, if a higher-quality edition is desired, Cambridge will be publishing the ESV in the Pitt Minion (thinline) format in early October 2008. Depending on the bindings, these cost from about $50-$81 on Amazon.com
Incredible! August 10, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have always had a NIV and this ESV is awesome and I like it 984987489 times better. This is a sturdy Bible with good binding. Its easy to read in a quiet time, in church, or in bed at night. I think that if you are skeptical of the quality, like I was at first because of the price (cheap), just take my word for it that its is very durable and is well-wroth the purchase.
