A Good Translation For Native Japanese October 1, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am an American student of Japanese and I bought two of these bibles, one for me and another for my Japanese friend who was interested in reading the bible. He said that it was a good "sense" translation. The smaller kanji characters under the title actually mean something like common language. Several of my Japanese friends have also read other Japanese translations and they said that this one was more like actual Japanese instead of the archaic language used in others. Naturally, since the bible is foreign to them a lot of the concepts were still difficult to understand but the simple and "more natural" language helped. It has really been helpful for me also to read this version because it has helped me learn the style of Japanese writing. Overall I think this is a pretty good book.

even better than i thought - it is softcover, but a very nice softcover (in typical softcover bible style), and has a much nicer appearance than the cover art image would lead you to believe. i tried to research quite a lot before buying, in order to find a good catholic bible in japanese, and this seems to be the one to get (at least if you're overseas). recommended.

In response to another reviewer: Of course the average Japanese has a hard time understanding the specialized vocabulary and concepts of this rather literal translation. His culture is telling him very different things than what the Bible teaches and he is not familiar with the history and culture of the Bible. This translation (ISBN#4820212117) is the New Interconfessional (Shin Kyodoyaku) produced by the Japan Bible Society in cooperation with the Roman Catholic Church in Japan. It is used in most main-line Protestant churches and Catholic churches in Japan. If you want an easy-to-understand version for the man on the street, try the Japanese Living Bible. And, Oh Yes, there IS a manga Bible. See the Manga Bible Story-Japanese.
A good first step? March 19, 2002 37 out of 39 found this review helpful
Thank you for making a Japanese bible! But we need an updated translation. A japanese friend of mine (who grew up in Japan) flipped thruogh this bible, and said the language was hard to read, and there were words she didn't recognize. What we really need is a Magna version of the bible. That is what everyone grows up reading, that is what they are used to reading, that is the style of literature they are comfortable with. Is anyone doing such a thing? How bout it, JBS?
