I sincerely appreciated the authenticity of Rory and his commitment to holding true to a strong set of core values. While his task of leading talented people requires give and take and some degree of "tolerance", Rory was encouraging leaders not to sacrifice on core matters just to hold on to talented people. Often times the best action for a person who has lost site of his/her talent and value is the shock of realizing life is full of performers who need a reality check.

I am using this book as a study tool for my Christian contemporary worship band. We have all found it very useful in identifying character issues that confront musicians and singers of all levels of ability. The book addresses those issues from a Judeo-Christian perspective. I highly recommend it.

I really don't want to go negative on this book, however... some folks reading this will use it as a crutch to explain away subjects like...
1. why I don't practice.. but still want to remain in the Praise and Worship team. Or, I really am a good throat singer, and play a heavy handed piano... but because I'm a "good" singer I can remain in my position... and overwhelm the sound system and the rest of the team with over playing the keyboard.
Or,
2. I only know 3 chord forms on guitar, no scales or have any melodic knowledge of the fretboard, yet I will insist on playing crummy lead breaks and tie up the rest of the group during practice, because I don't really feel like perfecting my skills on the instrument. But... I will always be loud and demand that the team only play the songs I like... by the way, I only like "certain" kinds of Christian music. Not that country and western stuff and just forget about any old moldy hymn....
or
3. That song is too hard, let's play it my way.... (practice makes perfect hombre).
Attitudes, come from both sides of the spectrum.
I personally just want to put together good music, that not only inspires praise and worship, but also inspires the musicians in the group... all of them. Granted there are folks who really want to be musicians, but don't feel the need to really put effort into it.
There are always lots of dynamics within any group or Praise and Worship team.
I keep it simple.... no Challenge in front of you, is greater than the Power within you. That means no excuses... work on the music, work on the instrument you play, work on yourself.
Otherwise, no matter how good you are at the craft, or how good you think you are... you won't belabor anyone else who really approaches this ministry seriously, with the intent of bringing people to the Lord.
I honestly believe that before you can become a member of any praise and worship team, you should get into other ministries serving the sick, or the prisons, the infirm, or the poor first. Those will humble you, and put your blessings and gifts in the proper perspective.

Rory Noland articulates his passion for worship and provides essential guidelines for growth, affirmation and reflection. It can be used as a text for a worshippers seeking to enhance their knowledge and perspectives. I recommend it without any reservations.
Amazing! October 13, 2005
My husband and I run a discipleship school for musicians and this is the second year we have taken our students thru this book. We have also gone through it with our worship team and everyone that has read it says that it has changed their lives. I recommend it to anyone. It is an easy read, with life changing content!
