| Customer Reviews:
This collection is vibrant and wonderful! February 26, 2006 This collection of songs is rich in "oldies but goodies" and full of "new" songs that constantly surprise with their wonderful lyrics and vibrant sometimes haunting melodies. Anyone looking for a way to create a powerful connection with God for themselves or a congregation through music should get this book.
Lift Every voice August 9, 2005 When it was released in 1981, "Songs of Zion" filled a glaring void in music publishing for a truly African American hymnal. The editors and collators, William B. McClain, J. Jefferson Cleveland, and Verolga Nix, compiled over 200 songs either written by or closely identified with the historic Black Church.
In addition to the wonderful variety of songs, each section/genre of music is preceded by a historical account that briefly yet powerfully shares the story of the creation of that genre. These sections offer a historical account of hymns in the Black worship experience, a historical account of the Negro Spirituals, and a historical account of Black Gospel music.
Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of "Beyond thd Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction." He has also authored "Soul Physicians" and "Spiritual Friends."

This book is a great compilation of gospel songs and spirituals, but even more than that; it provides wonderful information on the history of the genre. It is certainly worth the price.
The Definitive Handbook on African American Religious Music December 1, 1999 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
"Songs of Zion" was created to be a hymnal of Black religious tradition available to the United Methodist churches. But it's much more. In addition to providing 250 songs, in includes historical accounts of various musical movements within the Black church, and information for performance. An incredible history lesson!
