5 out of 5 stars Hollow and unmoving? I also strongly disagree.   December 15, 1998

This has been a family favorite ever since we taped it many years ago off a cable channel. I think it's one of the most credible dramatizations of the gospel I have ever seen.

I'm happy to see it finally come to video.

4 out of 5 stars Hollow and unmoving? I couldn't disagree more.   November 24, 1998
The cast and score of Godspell infuse life and energy into well-known scripture and sometimes difficult to imagine context in a way that is both uplifting and inspiring. Jesus is perfectly compassionate and kind; Judas is loving but conflicted; the portrayal of the Pharisees is clever and moving.

The body of the film comprises several parables which are each creatively imagined and directed.

Though the "gethsemane scene" takes some license with the Biblical account, the film does quite a good job sticking close to Matthew's Gospel (even while projecting it onto modern-day New York City).

No recreation of the gospel is perfect; Godspell doesn't pretend or try to be. It is a screen adaptation, hippie interpretation of a timeless story that will facinate and enlighten.
