2 out of 5 stars Two stars for the laughter   January 21, 2008

I actually had a pencil and note pad in hand yesterday as I sat down to watch this. Thought I might have to take some notes and do some research of my own later. The only evidence that is presented is the scant (and controversial) mentions in Josephus' and Tacitus' histories. The Josephus history is the only one that mentions Jesus by name and it was written 93 years after the events are supposed to have occurred. No other real evidence was offered. After making a rather weak case for then accepting the gospel accounts as factual history, the entire rest of the film was just pro-belief analysis of the New Testament from "experts"- all of them believers, none of them skeptics. No evidence, just textual analysis of the New Testament with a pre-supposition that it is true. When pointing out the discrepancies between the four New Testament gospels, the film claims that it's the discrepancies that show that these are honest, individual accounts and not a form of collusion. They made sure to make it a point that when people's stories match up perfectly, that is a sure sign that they are lying. Later in the film, during the segment regarding the resurrection, with a straight face and with such apparent sincerity, they pointed out how the agreement between the four gospels is a testament to the truthfulness of their claims. The film isn't even consistent according its own logic. At one point, Lee is trying to make an analogy between a finger print at a crime scene and some element of the narratives of the gospels. Well, that's all fine and dandy and poetic, but it's NOT evidence. Honestly, this film is about a man who sacrificed his intellectual integrity in order to save his marriage. Sad. No relationship is worth that. Even Jesus admonished his followers to turn their backs on their families rather than sacrifice their integrity and give up their beliefs- of course he meant their beliefs in him. I would have given it one star, but there were enough laughs that at least I was as entertained as I was annoyed at being suckered in by something that purported to be a presentation of evidence.

Note: It has been pointed out to me that I made an error in my review. I said that the Josephus history was written 93 years after the events are supposed to have taken place. If I remember correctly, the film puts the Josephus history as being written in the year 92, other sources say 93. The error on my part is that this would be roughly 60 years after the crucifixion is supposed to have occurred. I forgot to subtract to obtain the difference between the year of Jesus' crucifixion and the year Josephus' history was written. My intentions were good, my math was unfortunately a little off at the time of composing my review.

4 out of 5 stars A logical look at the Gospels   January 18, 2008

Lee Strobel is a well-educated legal journalist who sets out to prove that Christianity is false. He admittedly feels threatened when his wife becomes a Christian and says that he is afraid of losing her. Strobel constructs a method of investigating the case for Christ just as he would in a court of law. He gathers evidence from Christian scholars and puts hard questions to them as to the validity of the Bible and Jesus' claims of being the Messiah. The viewer is taken on the step-by-step journey which Lee Strobel made which converted him from atheism to Christianity. This kind of presentation is very appealing to those of a logical and systematic nature. It is made even more powerful by the fact that Lee Strobel's wife relates what she went through while her husband was on his quest for truth. The one important point which he failed to make is that no one can absolutely prove that Jesus is who is said he was. That would negate the need for faith which is an essential element for a believer, and which is what Jesus called us to.

    5 out of 5 stars Strobel's Investigative Report   January 7, 2008

Lee Strobel has taken his story, his book, and the results of his investigative research about Christ... and very conveniently placed them within this DVD.

You will be interested to hear from the very scholars Strobel originally questioned on his search for truth. (ex. Dr. William Lane Craig, Dr. Gary Habermas, Dr. J.P. Moreland, Dr. Ben Witherington III, N.T. Wright, etc.) You will find their scholarship sound and worthy of respect. You cannot simply blow off the testimonies and research of these renowned New Testament scholars. Anyone concerned with honest historical research of Jesus will consider the content of this video.

This is no ordinary documentary. Strobel is concerned with showing his viewers a moderate summary of the evidence he collected along the way. Together, he and his wife retell the journey that led to the overwhelming evidence that the Gospels can be trusted in their accounts of Jesus.

I applaud Mr. Strobel for his honesty and his sincere desire to help others use their hearts AND their minds when confronting the most controversial man in all of history. Watch and learn how this atheist/agnostic came to discover the greatest truth of all!
