For Fans of the Old and the New July 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is great to hear the progression of a band over time, and Relient K is no exception. "The Bird and the Bee Sides" continues to add to the shape of the band's sound while also paying tribute to the past. This time around the band adds some southern flair with the banjo and laid-back acoustic guitar. The maturity heard in the MMHMM and Five Score & Seven Years Ago albums continue with `Curl Up and Die' and `There Was Another Time In My Life'. The spunky lyrics are still there. The best part of this mega EP is the variety in songs. Every band member is featured, and the genres vary. I never expected to hear Reggae from Relient K, but there it is and it actually doesn't sound out-of-place among the other songs
The Bee Sides add extras that fit right into the older albums. I especially enjoyed the demo version of "Jefferson Aeroplane" I love the original version, and this one is great also. The melody is a bit slower and altered, the intro is different, and the dead air and rap is gone from the end, but the song is still there. Becuase it samples from previous EPs and old songs changed or never released, 'The Bird and the Bee Sides' is like buying additional songs to add onto the ends of all of the previous albums, not just 'Five Score.'
