More about music than religion October 10, 2007 This film is simply great music. We're not a religious family, so the Jesus story didn't have a deep moral impact on us. It's just a wonderful movie to watch as a family - my 6-year-old daughter loves the singing and especially dancing scenes. My 9-year-old son really likes the historical elements of Romans vs. Jews - and they both sing the songs from memory after just one viewing. This is ALW at his best, and Canadian Norman Jewison did a masterful job of injecting some fresh 70s hippies-on-the-bus cool into it. It is surprisingly current even after all these years; even the clothes would look chic on today's fashion runways. There's music to like in a ton of different styles - sappy and romantic, forceful and aggressive, upbeat and energetic, dramatic and slow, and finally, dirgelike and depressing. It may not be to everyone's taste (especially anyone who prefers their bible study on the literal side) but it does make for a wonderful family movie. And this copy is in excellent shape, so the digital transfer takes nothing away from the full-on cinema experience.
I love it!!! September 26, 2007 Jesus Christ Superstar is the greatest rock opera of all times!!! I've seen this movie countless times and will watch it countless times still. The songs are all haunting, the Sanhedrin is great, the anachronisms are fun, and the casting is perfect (if you believe Jesus was blond). It's also a really painless way to learn a little religion.
The Debate Rages... September 24, 2007 ...on and on in my house. Which is better...the Broadway version or the Hollywood version? This Unitarian Universalist family is firmly divided. He likes Ian I like Ted. We both agree that Carl rules. More importantly, we're turning on a whole new generation to this excellent movie and soundtrack with my 6 and 10 year old kids singing snippets around the house and asking questions about faith.
Still awesome! September 11, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this dvd for a 15 year old grandson who loves music and figured he couldn't be hurt by a little religous history. Although I didn't see this movie 30 years ago (yep, you can tell from the hair styles), I did see Jesus Christ Superstar at the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, VA and, of course, almost everyone knows at least a couple of the the most memorable songs. My preview of this film (before sending it off to grandson) left me in awe. Whether you see if for religous, historical or just musical reasons, it's a GREAT show to see. What marvelous music! I thought watching something this dated would be a detraction but it wasn't. Ted Neeley is outstanding as Jesus. I was glad to send it on, hoping my grandson enjoys it as much as I did.
A "Must own"!! August 28, 2007 You do not have to be a Christian to enjoy this DVD!!!
If you do not own this DVD, and you love music, inspiring performances, or just well made movies, you are missing out! After many years of not owning a copy of this film, I purchased a copy of this DVD. I was amazed at how great this film was, and is!! You will find inspiring performances, excellent cinematography, and an excellent commentary from Ted Neeley (the star). The vocals and arrangements are amazing, and stood the test of time. This material is still fresh, still thought provoking. The performances are still awe inspiring. Anyone who enjoys incomparible vocal performances should not miss this DVD. Buy it, play it, wear it out, and buy another one!! The vocal performances of Ted Neeley as Jesus Christ and Carl Anderson as Judas are especially noteworthy, although there is not one mediocre performance in this entire film. The quality of the reproduction seems as good as you could expect, and the sound is very good as well. Well worth the investment, for parents and children alike.
