GOOD QUALITY LEATHER COMPACT BIBLE January 3, 2003 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
I recommend this bible for those who travel or like to have the scriptures handy wherever they go. The size is perfect for transporting from place to place. It is less than an inch thick and has no study guides, which makes it easier to use when a passage needs to be found quickly or when one just wants to read. The binding is secure and durable. Even though this New American Standard translation is updated, replacing "Thee, Thou and Thy" with "You and Your", accuracy has not been compromised. The words of Christ are in red. There are also maps and a concordance.
The Greatest Book--New International Version August 15, 2002 8 out of 23 found this review helpful
I love the Bible. It is the story of how our Holy God (Namely Yahweh, His Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit) has had and is having an ongoing love affair with humanity. Faithful to us throughout all history, the Bible shows that God has loved us even as we have continually played the prostitute within our hearts. The Old Testament shows us how God came to one nation in particular out of all the diseased and dying cultures of Earth and gave it instruction in healthy living. Yet the history books of the Old Testament show how like an angered, hungry infant, we swatted away the bottle of life when it was presented to us. The Prophets and the Psalms are filled with rebukes to the self-destructive people of the world. They are also full of the promise of a new day. Many passages of these books are filled with praise for God's deeds--past, present and future. The Gospels are the story of how Jesus, God's Son, came to once and for all rescue mankind from itself and the world's unseen forces of evil. The book of Acts continues with the story of the wonders and sacrifices of the early Church. The letters address how we are to live as the people of God. The Revelation is one of the most beautiful and awesome pieces of literature ever written. If you haven't read it lately (or ever), let me recommend the greatest book ever written. This New International Version would be particularly wonderful for those of you who once had a run-in with the Authorized or "King James" Version (don't worry, I couldn't make heads or tails of it either). I have owned this particular format of the Bible (NIV Thinline Bonded Green Leather) for some time. It is sturdy as a warhorse. Get this book!
Large Print and thin makes it a great combination May 31, 2002 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
the large print makes reading the bible more enjoyable. i am not straining my eyes which causes fatigue. less fatigue makes reading the WORD more enjoyable and have longer devotionals. the real great feature is that it is really really thin!!! so it is more portable and convient to praise the creator and meditate in this glory. this is the second one that i am buying for a friend.... :^)
Pure Sacred Scripture, Word for Word April 16, 2002 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
Okay, so I'm a Roman Catholic and wish they'd also translated the Deuterocanonical (Protestant "Apocryphal") books. Still, this is the best study Bible out there. The translators have held to their literal word-for-word translation philosophy (as opposed to though-for-thought "translation," or concept-for-concept "interpretation of some of the weaker English Bibles). The only significant criticism, worth about a 1/2 star is that modern study can still benefit from the technically archaic second person singlar/plural (thou, thee, thy, thine and you, ye, your, yours) when attempting to discern whether or not the addressor was speaking to single persons, or more than one. I keep my KJV handy for that, in addition to my Spanish Reina-Valera 1960. : )Ignore those who complain about lack of notes. This Bible wasn't meant to have them. Get yourself a good couple of commentaries and have at it, if notes are what you want.
Pure Text September 25, 2001 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is the Bible to give to anyone who has never owned or seen a Bible before. It contains no study notes, no interpretations, no human contribution to the contents except translation. It is the Word of God and only the Word of God--the power of God unto salvation--in plain, easy to understand English. Read it cover to cover at least once a year and you will discover treasures!
