5 out of 5 stars Wonderful presentation of the New Testament   October 16, 2007

If you struggle with keeping a Bible reading schedule, get an audio Bible!! And listen while reading. This has helped countless people (including myself) with consistency and focus.

Now about this product . . . A wonderful presentation of the New Testament. Engaging. If you are a fan of audio Bibles, you will be thrilled to include this recording in your library. I have Scorby, MacLean, Johnston. I believe this is the best I've heard. Great for commuting to and from work.

    5 out of 5 stars Priceless...   October 14, 2007

This dramatic audio experience is brilliant. Not to belittle the oral skills of preachers anywhere, but professional actors bring a realism and a sense of immediacy to the words of the New Testament that is rarely achieved in a church service. Every aspect of this production is extremely well done and will not disappoint.

If you aren't careful, you will likely have moments while listening that you slip into a sense of actually hearing Jesus speak to you. For those of us who believe in Him and call Him our Lord, this can inspire and quicken the spirit quite unlike any other experience. I highly recommend this audio experience to those seeking a fresh experience of the scriptures.

Note that the New Testament Audio Bible has a different soundtrack than the Word of Promise from Jesus gift book and CD. That smaller package has a soundtrack that is solely piano, whereas the New Testament Audio Bible has a full symphonic score. In my opinion, the full symphonic score is superior in setting the stage for the actors voices.

5 out of 5 stars Best Buy Since Passion of the Christ   October 14, 2007

This is the best and most exciting product I've seen, since the Passion of the Christ came out. The drama is gripping (sound effects, music background, and quality acting in the audio). You forget that it is the celebrity doing the sound and feel like you are in the 1st century hearing the actual person speaking. Amazing. I'll listen to this for the next 50 years.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Take on the Bible   October 8, 2007

This is an exceptional audio book. The voice acting is well executed, the sound effects are true to expectations, and the care to preserve authenticity to the text is commendable. While the gospels are a moving and well done narrative, I find the epistles and Apocalpyse to be more to my liking.

When I was initially exposed to the audio book, I was concerned that it was another mechanism of fundamentalist-pandering. The NKJV might not be the best academic translation of the Bible, it is certainly the best choice for this performance. This is not a replacement for the Bible, but a means of bolstering it.

Ultimatley, the price is entirely fair and I can assure you that you will not regret the purchase. This rendition of the Bible takes no specific theological angle and is enjoyable by both liberals and conservatives.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Potent   October 8, 2007

I really had my doubts about this one. The use of mainstream actors and the "theater" concept gave me the impression that this was just another step in the fall of Christianity in America, as we continually try to make the message more appealing to the mainstream and sacrifice a lot of substance in the process. However, I was dead wrong. This is an incredibly powerful way to study the Word! Being a stodgy old man (okay, I'm in my 20's), I've really forgotten about the large difference between hearing and reading the Bible, but this was a reminder that faith comes by "hearing the word," and there is something truly inspiring about this production. As odd as it seems to me, I will be one of the first in line for the Old Testament.

As to the other reviewer's concern about a lack of "righteous anger," I really had the opposite view. In some places where Jesus was warning people in love, I felt the actor portrayed a more indignant or cold emotion. This just illustrates that they could have never decided on a script that everyone would agree with. The Word is what is is, though, and I truly appreciate this compelling format, regardless of a few potential stumbles or controversial intonations.
