5 out of 5 stars A church every Christian needs to read!   February 10, 2007

John MacArthur deals with the subject of Pragmatism in such a powerful way.

The following is a condensed version of what this book revealed to me:

Pragmatism is the view that meaning or worth is determined by practical consequences.
The error of pragmatism simply put: "if it works, it must be right"!

The pragmatic approach to doing church is to determine what attracts people and makes the church grow. We are far too human. We are limited in our perception and understanding. We are prone to believe that good results are necessarily indicative of faithfulness to Scripture. This is not true. A man centered gospel is always full of error and compromise and "good ideas." A man centered church is a glorified country club and although a man centered government seems good, it will always make its decisions based on what is good instead of what is right.

Get this book and read it over and over, if need be. This is a message that can not be overlooked, as many of our "modern" day churches would have to be considered "pragmatic". This book warns of the danger of pragmatism! Heed the warning.

5 out of 5 stars A clarion call for faithfulness   January 19, 2007

It amazes me that this book was written so long ago, when you consider the content of the writing. John Macarthur could have written the book for the need of the church TODAY. It has a clear warning about consumer lead church, the felt needs culture and ways of 'doing church' apart from the principles laid down in scripture. If you need a bench mark to measure the attributes of your life and church that bring together all the best that scripture teaches then this is that book. I loved that way that it refutes the problems of 'Purpose Driven' before it even came on the scene so is not a Rick Warren bashing book, but it is a book showing clearly and concisely what the standard of church should be, and to an extent, where current church trends have fallen. A really uplifting and encouraging read

Yes,but don't water down the truth, Faith and Repentance in His only Son,so let His Spirit Speak the Truth to you and respond in thanks and obedience to His Commands.Dr.John MacArthur Jr.is God's servant and is a man at best, but such a Best Man in Defending the Gospel Truth. Also read the Gospel According to Jesus,DO-IT with Your Bible Open.As Peter said: "May you grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for disciples of Christ   January 6, 2007
This is an excellent resource for understanding the state of the "Christian Church" in America. We use it in a discipleship training class and have the participants read this intuitive author's description of how the church became like the world- a sad but true account of where we're at in God's timeline of HIs church. He will be victorious and triumph and we patiently wait with Him and teach others to do the same.

5 out of 5 stars Beware The Dangers Of Pragmatism!   December 25, 2006
In this book, John MacArthur deals with the dangers of pragmatism. He compares today's situation with the downgrade controversy Charles Haddon Spurgeon dealt with a century ago.

Two things that made an impression about this book:
    1) MacArthur points out a lot of books that deal with the role of the pastor don't mention the pastoral epistles (1, 2 Timothy, Titus).
    2) He gives an excellent analysis of Paul's sermon on Mars Hill.
