4 out of 5 stars Good resource version   September 1, 2005

I found this translation of the bible to be more accurate in some areas. Instead of the literal translation it often takes the meaning of the messeage from the original greek and hebrew and conveys it better. I was surpized to find a good subject index and a read through the bible in a year section. But I thought the paper and cover quality could have been better. Its fine for the price I suppose but I personally would want a sturdier binding and paper quality. Overall it is as good or better than I expected and great for alternative bible translation.

5 out of 5 stars The anvil.   August 1, 2005

"Infidels of eighteen hundred years have been refuting and overthrowing this book, and yet it stands today as solid rock. Its circulation increases, and it is more loved and cherished and read today than ever before. Infidels, with all their assaults, make about as much impression on this book as a man with a tack hammer would on the Pyramids of Egypt.

"When the French monarch proposed the persecution of Christians in his dominion, an old statesman and warrior said to him, 'Sire, the church of God is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.' So the hammers of infidels have been pecking away at this book for ages, but the hammers are worn out, and the anvil still endures. If this book had not been the book of God, men would have destroyed it long ago. Emperors and popes, kings and priests, princes and rulers have all tried their hand at it; they die and the book still lives."

"No other book has been so chopped, knived, sifted, scrutinized, and vilified. What book on philosophy or religion or psychology or belles lettres of classical or modern times has been subject to such a mass attack as the Bible? With such venom and skepticism? With such thoroughness and erudition? Upon every chapter, line and tenet? The Bible is still loved by millions, and studied by millions."

5 out of 5 stars the truth   July 7, 2004

The first 4 books are fantastic, and if you really read them, they sem a little out of sync with contemporary religion. But they are an interesting read, dealing with the early Hebrews, mythology, and the God with no name. "Deuteronomy" is not quite on the same level. In fact, it's a few books later until it really hits me as strongly as it did in the early books (if not even harder): The Preacher (Ecclisiastes) really speaks to me, even today. Religion, however, is not about reading, it's about participation. These books do not speak directly to you, christians of the 21st century, but you have much to learn from them. Some writers are concerned with record-keeping, some with obscure prophesy, some with very practical matters. "Psalms" should be sung, not read, we all know this.

The new testament must be read in the context of the old, and as such, some of it is contradictory. The writings of Paul are obviously the work of a great mind, but God would want us to realize he was not perfect, and as such we must read these works critically. Approach this not as a book to be left on the shelf. Approach this not as a book to be read without criticism. Approach it as a collection of very old works of people that tried to do the impossible: put the Almighty in a confined book of words. Approach it like this, and you are on the way to the truth.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Bible-especially for children   August 27, 2003

I am writing this specifically regarding the translation, since I have not spent much time looking through the entire volume.

I bought two copies, for use in Children's Church, ages 1-11. Although this is not a "children's translation" it is probably the easiest translation to understand, even easier than the Children's edition of the NIV and the Living Translation. I particularly recommend it for people with limited language ability, although it looks like it would be useful for general use too.

4 out of 5 stars PLease consider this...   August 14, 2003
I really must write a bit regarding a previous reviewer whose understanding of language, translation, and how God MUST act in the preservation and transmission of the Bible is dubious and therefore potentialy misleading. The so-called "Majority Text" upon which the KJV is based was at the time of its' translation a collection of ancient texts, the best available at that time. But it was not one manuscript. Since then, older and more accurate writings were found. Some people would have us believe that unless a manuscript was preserved to the knowledge of Western (English?) believers somehow God's Word was lost. This is nonsense at best, arrogance at worst. The KJV is a very good translation. Regarding the CEV, it too is an admirable effort by people commited to the transmission of God's Word into English as used today from the best mansucripts available.
