5 out of 5 stars Best Study Bible Available   August 3, 2008

The Apologetics Study Bible I've ever owned. It is helping me to understand the Bible (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth is what the letters of the word Bible means. It helps in my Bible studies. These radio preachers, one in particular charges an arm and a leg (so to speak) for the same exact Bible). Amazon doesn't charge high prices on most everything. Their service is first rate. A Christian friend referred me to Amazon. I checked and ordered the Bible. I Christian friend(Larry McCray) likes the Bible and has ordered one for himself. I recommend this Bible to anyone who reads the Bible. I highly recommmend Amazon to anyone wanting something. Chances are, Amazon will have it and at a good price than anyone else.

I have 12 or 15 bibles but this bible is more informative than all. With all of the articles and info on other religions makes it exciting to read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Research Item For Any Minister's Library   July 27, 2008

Let me state what this is designed for. It is not meant to be a person's only study Bible. It does not have cross references as most study Bibles do. It's notes are primarily aimed at the emphasis on apologetics. If one is getting a person their first study Bible, I would recommend the International Inductive Study Bible or the MacArthur Study Bible.

This edition is meant for a person interested in defending their faith. As I would not make this a person's first study Bible, I also would not use this as a direct evangelism tool (i.e. buy it for a non-Christian). It is designed for Christians to share their faith.

It gives various tools to help, in addition to the notes and book introductions. It has articles on various apologetic issues from several different contributors. (The intros and notes are also written by different contributors.) It has some bios of apologists, and it has some "twisted scripture" sections, which either show how said Scripture is twisted or how this verse reveals how others twist Scirptures (an example of the latter is Gal. 1:8-9).

It is not perfect. One thing is the placement of the articles. Sometimes, it fits the subject of the article (e.g. looking at creation viewpoints in Genesis, or at worldview in Proverbs), but sometimes it has nothing to do with the part of Scripture it's placed. Likewise, the bios miss several key apologists. It contains one of my two favorite early apologists (Athanatius) but not the other (Tertullian). Even with modern apologists, it includes C. S. Lewis but ignores Francis Schaeffer.

One other flaw: I think that it misses opportunities in notes to deal with apologetics. For example, the two key verses on apologetics are 1 Peter 3:15 and Jude 3, but neither are dealt with in the footnotes.

This uses the Holman Christian Standard Bible, a good newer translation. I also like the fact that it tries to be uniting of true Christians rather than dividing them according to views on creation, etc.

This could have been done better, but it still is a needed resource, and useful in spite of its shortcomings. This would be a great gift for your pastor, Sunday School teacher, evangelist, or missionary friend.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth every penny!   June 30, 2008

I am extremely pleased with this Bible. With introductions to each book and tons of footnotes dedicated to an apologetic response, this Bible is a must for anyone interested in Christian Apologetics. With all the cults and false prophets on today's scene, Christians need a definitive response that is both sound in scripture and historically accurate, which you will find in The Holman Christian Apologetics Study Bible. The Holman translation is easy to follow and reflects up to date use of the English Language. Highly recommend!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Holman Apologetics Study Bible   June 10, 2008

I have read this bible and my New King James version concurrently to determine if the Holman translation compares in accuracy and "purity" to it. This translation uses the modern english terminolgy to make it easier to read. However, if one prefers the "flavor" and phraseology of the older KJ and NKJ versions, one may find this bible not as satisfying to read & study. That said the bible is suited for those who would not find the modern translation a negative. I compared identical verses in the Holman bible to the NKJ for accuracy. I found that their translation retains the essence & meaning of the NKJ.

The study notes at the bottom are informative without being overly wordy. I found the articles on apologetics to be very verbose and somewhat hard to decifer exactly what point the author was trying to make. Maybe that's because I never had any philosophy or theology classes, and I was trained to write in a succint style with brevity and clarity.

The format and style of this bible left something to be desired for me. That may be just a personal preference on my part. I will enumerate just in case anyone shares my preferences as these points may be the deciding factors on whether or not to buy this bible. The pages are an off white or grayish on a medium density black print. The type size is 8 or 9 point (not sure). If you have difficulty reading normal print type size, and require reading glasses, as I do, you may find this bible a little hard to read. You may opt for a large print bible.
The bible verses run continuosly, namely, each new verse does not start at the left margin of the column, but as the next sentence with the bible verse number preceding the verse. I prefer to have the verse start on a new line. This makes searching easier. This is not a "red letter" edition. The words of Christ are not in red. Again this is a personal preference, as I have found it easier to search for a particular verse of Christ when in red.

The cross reference notes are a very small type size, (6 point ?). Much smaller than the verse text. I have to use a magnifying glass. Again I state this for those of you who have difficulty reading small type. I have found over my 20 years of bible study that if you can't read comfortably you won't for long.

To summarize, the translation captures the meaning of the scriptures, and that would not be a major impediment to buying this bible unless you are used to the KJ or NKJ. For those who find these bibles difficult to read, you will like this translation. For those who can't easily read normal & small size type, you could find this uncomfortable to read for any extended period.
