5 out of 5 stars Scholarly and Up to Date   July 1, 2007

Raymond Brown's An Introduction to the New Testament is an outstanding example of contemporary Catholic New Testament scholarship. It covers just about everything you need to know, such as textual issues, basic history of the NT period, biblical interpretation, and the culture of first century Palestine.

Brown takes takes the standard positions on most issues of dating and authorship of the New Testament books, so if you want to know, e.g., why most scholars reject Pauline authorship of the Pastorals, you will find it here.

5 out of 5 stars Well Balanced for a wide audience.   June 4, 2007

This book is well balanced for a lot of people. For the scholars, there may be a lot of common knowledge information in these pages, but there yet may be gems pulled. For the lay person, whether having read a few books or just getting started, this book is written so well that many people can grasp the language, and come away from it with a much better grasp of the New Testament, and a start of the critical analysis approach to the who, what, why and where of the different books.
Good read, recommend it to all with any interest in the New Testament.

5 out of 5 stars The reference book for the NT   April 10, 2007

Excellent, concise and perfect for anyone having questions or just wants to learn more about the New Testament.

5 out of 5 stars Scholarly piece of work   April 5, 2007
The book does a fair analysis of all elements of the NT. He either states conflicting views in the body of the text or in the footnotes and/or bibliography before he states his opinion. After reading this book one would be well prepared to take on the interpretive commentary on the New Testament by an authoritative source since no attempt is made in this work to provide religious education - merely the best historical analyses possible with information available to date.
