5 out of 5 stars Greek New Testament with Spanish Intro and dictionary   March 5, 2006
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

There are two confusing earlier reviews listed below. This is Koine Greek and there is no German included anywhere in the book.

This is an excellent tool for study of the Greek text, for folks with a background in Spanish.

4 out of 5 stars This is indeed the UBS Greek New Testament, 4th Ed.   May 20, 2004

Make no mistake that this is the United Bible Society "Greek New Testament," 4th edition, and the only difference being that the prefaces are in Spanish and the dictionary in the back is not Greek-English, but Greek-Spanish. So, even if you don't speak/read Spanish, and want to save a lot of money on a 4th Edition UBS Greek New Testament, and already have a smaller Greek-English lexicon, this is a good way to go. This is especially true if you already have a 3rd edition UBS Greek New Testament since the preface to the 4th Edition doesn't say that much and the real "meat' is in the 3rd Edition preface/introduction, which is given in this 4th edition also, only, of course, in Spanish here. If you do speak Spanish, either as a native speaker or as a second language, then, of course, you'll especially enjoy this edition, especially with the Greek-Spanish dictionary. As one who can get around in Spanish, I find looking up the Spanish translations of Greek words in the back a fun way to keep the cobwebs off my Spanish. The only cautions include that one should understand that "leather" doesn't mean the kind of limp, flexible binding one is used to for a take-to-church Bible, but is essentially a hardbound-type leather binding. (For the limper binding I understand the choice would be the "Reader's Greek N.T.", which is also available from Amazon.) Also, the Greek font used in the 4th Edition of the UBS Greek N.T. is somewhat lighter than the print appearing in earlier editions of the UBS Greek N.T. which some may not like as well, depending on the age of their eyes. (On the other hand, some may prefer it. It is very similar to the familiar font found in earlier editions.)

3 out of 5 stars One important caveat: read this before you buy   May 4, 2004

(Kudos to Amazon for having inserted the words "Spanish Version" soon after I originally posted the following:)

One important caveat: If you look at the "larger picture" on the web page, you'll notice it says "Introduccio'n en Castellano" and "diccionario". The introduction is indeed in Spanish, and the dictionary is Greek->Spanish.

Two minor quibbles: The web page says "leather bound", but it's not. It's cheapo leather-look, as would really be expected at this price - so no big complaint, but be aware you're not getting a terrific deal on a leather-bound GNT. And, getting really picky, the font is decent-sized, but with very thin strokes; I'm finding it irritating to read.

A better choice for some might be the new Zondervan "Reader's Greek New Testament" (ISBN 0310248884) which has a more-readable font and much nicer cover, font, gold-edged pages, etc. for around the same price.

5 out of 5 stars Good Greek and Modern German texts   February 3, 2004

I do not understand why the previous reviewer states this volume is not an original language text. The German Bible Society catalog and the opening pages of this volume both state it is the 27th edition of the Nestle-Aland Greek New Testament and identical to the UBS 4th edition text. These are an original language edition, not Modern Greek. It has the same critical apparatus and cross-references all Nestle-Aland editions have. (The 27th edition was slightly revised and updated.) The print is very crisp with no confusion over rough or smooth breathing marks and accents.

The German texts are both good Modern German. Because the German texts are printed two columns to a page, the font for the German versions is a little on the small side, but still readable without difficulty by most people. The Einheitsübersetzung New Testament text is an ecumenical text, although primarily produced by Roman Catholics. For a number of years this was my primary text for personal Bible reading, even though I am not a Roman Catholic. It is a very readable text and quite accurate. I also have several study Bibles that use the 1984 Luther text. It is also very accurate and very readable, although it tries to preserve some of the feel and cadence of the very early Luther versions, somewhat like the Modern King James Version in English tries to preserve the feel and the cadence of the normally available King James Version.

The size of this volume is no longer the familiar pocket edition size known to generations who used the Greek New Testament. It is a bit oversized and hard to fit into a normal jacked pocket. Because the Greek text is on one page and the two German editions are on the facing page, it is a thicker volume than the usual Greek New Testament. Still, for anyone who wishes to carry a printed copy of these versions and use them together to preserve and improve one's German and one's Greek, it is a good volume to purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but be aware - This is not Koine Greek!   June 27, 2000

Let me first say that for the price, this is a fine book for any greek speaking person to have. But do not purchase the book if you are looking for a book in the "original" language. This is the New Testament in modern greek, not the koine greek of New Testament times, and there is a difference.
