Magnificent rendition of RSV-CE translation April 30, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The quality of the Oxford University Press, bonded leather bound, RSV-CE Compact Edition is excellent. I also own the Pacific Duvelle bound RSV-CE Compact Edition, and it is very nice as well. I prefer the bonded leather version due to the fact that it's more flexible, and will lay relatively flat (and stay open) when placed on a desk.
Highlights: - Beautifully (bonded) Leather Bound - High quality paper (thin, because it has to be) - Integrated ribbon marker - Stitched binding of all signatures for durability - Gift presentation (or it's nice if you buy this as a gift to yourself) section at front (i.e. Baptism, First-Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Children, etc.
If you prefer the RSV-CE Bible translation, and are looking for a compact leather-bound Bible, I highly recommend this product. 6 stars :)
Best RSV-CE Compact April 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a fine edition of the RSV-CE. It's size makes it incredibly useful when taking to Mass or prayer groups. The quality of binding is top-notch, and will last a long time. It is also nice to see that they added the section for prayers as well as the Vatican II document Dei Verbum. Well done!
RSV-CE Bible by Oxford February 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Oxford University Press has put together an excellent compact edition of the RSV-CE (Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition) Bible. It's done in brownish bonded leather and bound firmly so it won't fall apart over the years. There's a glossy section in the front for your name, baptism, first communion, confirmation, children, grandchildren, marriage, etc., which makes it useful as a presentation Bible. The edges are gilded and there's a ribbon marker. Now, the text is a bit small, but it was compactness that was the idea, so that's understandable, and the text itself does not bleed through the pages. I would not recommend it for someone with failing eyesight, certainly, but for everyone else the text is quite readable and doesn't bleed through the very thin pages.
Rather than extensive footnotes on each page that you would have in a bigger bible (and would be impossible in one this size) there are endnotes in the appendices, marked by an asterisk in the text. They don't cover everything you might want to know, but certainly most of the important points. Included is a section in the back of Catholic prayers, and the Vatican II statement on divine revelation.
The RSV-CE was originally considered very liberal when it came out in 1966, but is now the preferred translation for your more conservative Catholic theologians and scholars. The Vatican prefers it over the NAB (New American Bible) or NRSV-CE (New Revised Standard Version) for anglophone Catholics. The language is a little reminscent of a King James bible, but without being too cumbersome or boring for modern English readers. The RSV was translated by Protestants, and in the 50s and 60s a committee of Catholic scholars oversaw its amendment for Catholic use. The changes made to adhere to Catholic teaching are listed in the appendix.
This is a great bible to buy for someone who wants to carry it places or for reading at home or in bed (someone who has normal eyesight). I'm glad I bought this and not a different edition.
Nice English translation February 8, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This translation is easy to read without sounding goofy, like a paraphrase version. It's enjoyable to read aloud. The print is a little small but I can deal with it.
Perfect Fit September 10, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This beautiful Bible is not just in the RSV but it is the RSV-Catholic Edition (RSVCE) so you get a great and beloved translation and Catholic helps that deepen your reading. The size (compact version) makes it a wonderful carry along Bible, also, it really is a beautiful leather book. The new paper and clear print make it very readable despite it's smallish size (7+ by 5+). For everyday devotional reading you could not ask for better with the world-wide accepted translation even non-Catholics will find this a great addition for any serious Bible reader or someone seeking answers that only the Bible can give. Amazon also has this great Bible (RSVCE) in other formats otherwise we'd be off to England to obtain what I feel is the best Bible a Catholic could ask for. Just ask (or look) at the books of any Catholic theologian or teacher and 8-out-of-10 will be using the RSVCE.
